The progesterone test is the first step to assessing your fertility. The test is taken on day 21 of your cycle and will let you know if you have ovulated.

Progesterone is a hormone that helps prepare your uterine lining for pregnancy. Progesterone levels are checked on day 21 of the menstrual cycle to see if ovulation has occurred, with lower levels indicating that it has not. As a woman reaches menopause, progesterone levels will begin decreasing alongside the responsiveness of the ovaries.

You should take this test if:

  • You have experienced miscarriage
  • You experience ovulation issues
  • You have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • You have Endometriosis
  • You are going through/have gone through menopause

This sample must be collected 7 days before an expected period and this will depend on your cycle. If you have a 28-day period, you collect your sample on day 21 to confirm that ovulation has occurred.

If you have an irregular menstrual cycle or are currently taking hormonal contraceptives, or have taken them in the last 3 months, this may affect the accuracy of your results.
